Abstract
We investigated the change in the activity of hepatic antioxidative enzyme in the mouse after treatment with paraquat(35§·/§¸, i.p) and germanium-132(30§·/§¸,orally). The ability of Ge-132 to protect against paraquat-induced oxidative damage to the mouse liver has been examined by determining the level of lipid peroxidation, hydroperoxide(H2O2) and the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase(GPX). For the only paraquat-treated group, the activity of SOD was increased after 1st day and begun to decrease after 3 days. The activity of catalase gradually decreased. The activity of SOD at the early stage was increased due to the protective mechanism against the oxidative stress, and was decreased gradually with time. The activity of GPX is significantly increased in the PQ-treated group, but to a lesser extent in the PQ-Ge-132 treated group. The SOD activity was slightly decreased in the group which was treated with both PQ and Ge-132 , compared with that which treated, both SOD and catalase happened to decrease, while lipid peroxidation increase. As a result, Ge-132 may act as a scavenger rather than an antioxidant.
